THE BEST OF BOTH WORLDS: ILLINOIS CLIMATE

Something strange about Illinois is that we have amazingly cold and snowy winters but we also get to enjoy dreadfully hot and humid summers!!

Have you ever heard this fun fact? Well here it is… The hottest temperature recorded was on July 14, 1954, in East St. Louis Illinois.  It was 117 degrees Fahrenheit. That is way too hot for anybody I know!! But brrrrrr… the coldest temperature we had in Illinois was minus 36 degrees Fahrenheit!!

One last fact is that the deadliest tornado in the whole United States occurred in Illinois.  It was called the Tri-State Tornado of 1925.  It killed 695 people in three states! The scariest thing is that 613 of the victims lived in Illinois.

Illinois sure has a crazy weather, doesn’t it?

SEVERE WEATHER by Alec, Matt and José

Illinois gets it's share of horrible tornadoes. In fact many people get killed by tornadoes. Since 1916, tornadoes have caused many deaths, about 1,000 deaths.

Illinois has cold and snowy winters and hot and sunny summers. Sometimes Illinois has severe weather such as sleet, in which rain turns into bits of ice, and blizzards, large snowstorms. Southern Illinois has about 40 inches of precipitation. The average temperature is 47 degrees.

Do you know about the weather that can occur in Illinois?  There can be tornadoes, but they mostly are in southern Illinois. There can be major lightning warnings around Illinois. Also a fact about our state is that we share lightning warnings with Indiana! Illinois has some dangerous weather like hail, tornadoes, lightning storms, snow and sleet.

Illinois has 35 inches of snow per year in the north and about 45 inches in the south. The types of weather that mostly occur in Illinois in the winter are blizzards and light snow. In the summer the weather can be between 70 and 80 degrees. If you live near Lake Michigan it will keep you warmer in the winter and cooler in the summer.
